moving sale

Historiblography started as a group blog, but quickly became a Chris Bray blog, then quickly became a site for unfocused ranting and funny pictures of my daughter. I think the world desperately needs to hear my unfocused ranting, of course, but the world seems to be doing fine without it. So I'm going to put this blog out of its misery.

My next step, however, will be to start a new one, probably sometime in April. My plan is to focus more narrowly on state formation and the boundaries between state and nonstate institutions, so you can already see how millions of readers will be flocking to the new site. There will be a mix of history and current affairs.

And maybe the occasional baby picture.

I assume you mean "stop posting here" rather than "delete blog." If not, we can have an argument; if so, then just let us know where the new blog is and more power to you!

It's been a good run, here; I've enjoyed it immensely.

How about a life update as well? You're not listed on the UCLA history grad student page.

(Besides my general tendency to stalk all former Suck writers, I'm curious because there's an 85% chance I'll be starting a philosophy Ph.D at UCLA next fall ... the other place I've been admitted is UCSD, but things are leaning towards UCLA. (I applied "everywhere", the fact that I was only admitted to socal schools appears to be a coincidence.) So I had vague utopian visions of a grabbed lunch or something.)

"Stop posting here," totally. I wouldn't delete the blog -- our statcounter logs suggest that we're an important source of information on "math-related t-shirts" and "Maoists UCLA."

Life update: Thirteen month-old daughter spent the afternoon shouting "DAD DAD DAD DAD DAD" at an exhibit of German Expressionists at LACMA. Then she told some 10th-century Islamic art that "CAT CAT CAT CAT CAT." Her dad shot dirty looks at everyone who shot dirty looks at her, like, "suck it," because she's a baby, for crying out loud.

Dissertation going slowly, because of poverty, lots of part-time work, and child care duties. But it's exciting, and I'm enjoying it. I travel to archives whenever we can swing it -- mostly whenever I can bum frequent flier miles from family. I've seen Tuscaloosa, Tulsa, and Tallahassee this year, so you can't say my life is without glamour. Just published a research article in the Florida Historical Quarterly, to global acclaim and cries of joy. But mostly, bathtime is at 7:45. We play with the pink seahorse and the big yellow duck, then dry off the tiny tuchus and it's bedtime.

UCLA is a great place to go to grad school and a tough place to go to grad school. You'll be a TA in lower division courses for undergrads who don't want to be there, you'll spend roughly sixty hours a week trying to find a place to park, and you'll live on modest funding in a place with immodest rent and insulting living expenses. (Today, I paid ten dollars for a cheese sandwich.) And it's a state school in a sinking state, so who the fuck knows what the next couple of years will look like. But at least we have an incredibly ugly library.

Lunch anytime -- just shoot me an email: cbray@ucla.edu. Will be traveling briefly in April, but other than that....

Please don't fail to post the occasional baby pictures.

They're important; they connect everything else.

It's April. Oh, "sometime" in April. I guess I can wait a couple more weeks.

Since we are talking about selling a horse, click on 'kid horses for sale'. If you are wanting to sell something other than a horse, you can come back to this page later and list it then.
