the joys of medical billing

Madeline Cherkis-Bray just got a sternly worded letter from a hospital warning that she is in default on her payment agreement for medical services provided earlier this year in the neonatal intensive care unit. If she doesn't immediately pay the full balance due of $0.00, she will be liable for collection fees and attorney's fees in addition to the unpaid balance.

I actually thought about sending them a check for zero dollars, but I didn't want to pay for the stamp.

What's really scary about this is that they are apparently using software that's no smarter than our checkbook balancing program. Unless you tell it otherwise, it thinks zeros are deposits, which really screws me up when I try to enter a voided check.

We're talking 1980s-quality programing, here, maybe late-'70s. COBOL, my friends, is still with us. Like leprosy.
