our cognitive dissonance is strong enough to generate electricity and light the world, is our new plan for energy independence

Among the principle backers of Proposition 8, the anti-gay marriage initiative in California? The Church of Latter-Day Saints.

Marriage has always been between one man and one woman, and that's a tradition we have to preser- what's everybody laughing about?

Sadly, this is going to be a lot less funny when the sons of bitches manage to get that atrocity passed into law, as now seems all too likely to happen.

I really, really hate this state some days.

Maybe it's a feint, like the group challenging the "no political speech from the pulpit" rule: get prop 8 enacted into law, then giggle as it gets challenged, overturned, and marriage gets redefined by Bush-era libertarian judges (with concurring assents from Clinton-era liberals) as a freely contracted relationship between any number of people of any gender.....

Prop 8 amends the state constitution, is the problem -- the state courts can't overturn it. The federal courts? That road ends in front of Scalia and Co.

You're right, though The Nine have let liberty issues override social conservativism on ocassion. Maybe not This Nine, but still....

Damn.

I don't understand why you're surprised. The LDS church did exactly the same thing to ERA.

But the total population of the church is about 10 million worldwide. So...the same organization that can elect BHO can counter this move, if people get fired up enough.

And they sure seem pissed to me. So I'm hopeful.
