they were lovin' on jesus, i guess
So, the rest of this story aside, John Kerry has said that he was shot at, on December 25, 1968, "by our South Vietnamese allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas."I honestly have no idea, but this seems a little odd: how likely would Vietnamese soldiers have been to be celebrating Christmas? Is Vietnam a highly Christian nation? Tet is the Vietnamese New Year -- how many holidays do the Vietnamese celebrate on the American model? (If I go to Vietnam for Thanksgiving, will they make me a Tofurkey?)
I am counting on someone else to provide an answer in comments, saving me from having to do my own damn research.

Due to French ocupation there was a significant Catholic presence in Vietnam, particularly among Vietnamese loyal to the American regime.
I'm pretty sure that the Prussians brought the Christmas tree tradition to the US during the American Revolution, and ever since then, it has spread and insidiously infiltrated every nook and cranny of the Christmas season. Does that help?
Also in French class I did a report on Vietnam. It was on the food eaten in Vietnam. But if I remember from the other peoples's presentations, I think there was a large Christian contingency in the country. Moreover, I had a penpal from Indonesia when I was in elementary school, and I think she was Christian. That has to help.
Once again, the French turn out to be at the root of the whole thing...
